Senior Financial Analyst or Financial Analyst - Hybrid work eligible

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Finance and Accounting Services is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst or Financial Analyst to help support the accounting and financial reporting demands of Iowa Health Care including, but not limited to, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa Physicians, and Iowa Medical Mutual Insurance Company. The analyst will report to the Accounting and Financial Reporting Manager to independently record journal entries, prepare financial statements and supporting work papers, provide income statement and balance sheet variance analyses, and provide technical assistance to internal stakeholders regarding accounting processes, financial statement interpretation, and financial reporting applications.
Finance and Accounting Services intends to hire at either the Senior Financial Analyst or Financial Analyst level, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please indicate in your application materials the position you wish to be considered for or indicate both.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Provide financial oversight for accounting functions for multiple reporting entities of UI Health Care. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Coordinating monthly and year-end accounting close processes
- Assisting with timely and accurate preparation of various monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Analyzing actual versus budget variances and summarizing key takeaways
- Gathering and manipulating raw data for ad-hoc analyses
- Collaborating with internal stakeholders to prepare journal entries
- Assisting with analysis, interpretation, and implementation of accounting processes to comply with relevant Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements and other authoritative sources of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
- Providing guidance to end users of financial reporting applications as well as accounting policies and procedures
- Performing monthly reconciliations for system-wide asset and liability balances
- Assisting auditors from Auditor of State and external CPA firm with annual financial statement audits
- Fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders and cross-functional teams across the organization
- Assisting with the preparation of financial forecasts and budgets
- Contributing new ideas and seeking ways to improve existing processes
- Assisting with the development and testing of new general ledger and financial reporting tools
Required Qualifications
Senior Financial Analyst
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent amount of education and experience
- 3 years of accounting, auditing, and/or financial analysis experience
- Self-motivated with a passion for continuous learning and a desire to take on tough and challenging projects
- Superb time management skills and the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to perform complex financial analyses
- Demonstrated ability to filter through ambiguity while executing the details of tasks under tight deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in conjunction with cross-functional teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to think critically and creatively when working with data
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft software applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word
Financial Analyst
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent amount of education and experience
- 6 months of accounting, auditing, and/or financial analysis experience
- Self-motivated with a passion for continuous learning and a desire to take on tough and challenging projects
- Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to perform financial analyses
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate with cross-functional teams
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to think critically and creatively when working with data
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft software applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word.
Desired qualifications
Senior Financial Analyst
- Certified Public Accountant license
- Master’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting
- Experience in health care accounting. Preference is given to a background in an academic setting.
- Demonstrated ability to transform data into useful information tailored to leadership needs through storytelling and data visualization
- Experience with relational databases, structured query language (SQL), Tableau
- Experience in identifying opportunities for operational improvement, using creative efforts to bring about solutions
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous and complex situations
- Knowledge of University of Iowa accounting principles, internal controls, and information systems
Financial Analyst
- Certified Public Accountant license
- Master’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting
- Experience in health care accounting. Background in an academic setting preferred
- Demonstrated ability to transform data into useful information tailored to leadership needs through storytelling and data visualization
- Experience with relational databases, structured query language (SQL), and Tableau
- Experience in identifying opportunities for operational improvement, using creative efforts to bring about solutions
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous and complex situations
