The Director of Accounting/Controller is responsible for the accounting, reporting, and control function activities for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, UI Physicians, the Carver College of Medicine, and University of Iowa Health Systems.

Position Responsibilities

  • Review, evaluate, interpret and direct the development of reports, statements and other data and operating results.
  • Serve as primary Accounting & Financial Reporting Org Contact for Health Care Orgs.
  • Review all Health Care org access to GL Journal Entry, WebCV, PayCV, cash handling policies, and quarterly review of PeopleSoft GL access.
  • Supervise and coordinate the reporting and accounting functions for all colleges and administrative units assigned.
  • Organize and monitor the monthly and fiscal year accounting closing and preparation of financial reports and provide accurate and timely consultation and advice to management or other units on campus.
  • Control and update the chart of accounts and coordinate account code monitoring and education.
  • Supervise the development, implementation and maintenance of general ledger information systems.
  • Manage preparation for year-end audits by CPA firm and state auditors.
  • Review, evaluate, interpret and develop reports, statements and other data and operating results. Report results to Collegiate Administrators, Hospital Administration, Executive Leadership, the University, rating agencies, and the Board of Regents for UIHC/UIP/CCOM. 
  • Provide technical assistance to administration and department directors interpreting and analyzing revenue, expense, asset, liability and fund balance information.
  • Develop complex financial accounting analysis.  Present and provide interpretations to senior management for impact to financial statements.
  • Provide technical assistance and consultation in response to requests from administration, major administrative units and departments regarding financial statements, variance analysis, and financial reporting.
  • Review strategies for financial planning to ensure they meet financial accounting and reporting rules and regulations.  
  • Serve on committees and maintain liaison with major administrative units.
  • Analyze and report financial information to the Assistant CFO and CFO. 
  • Review financial transactions for adherence to the financial policies, procedures and regulations of the University, state and federal and third party payers.
  • Interpret and analyze regulations of federal, state or other regulatory programs.
  • Interpret, analyze, and provide guidance on relevant pronouncements by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and other authoritative sources of accounting principles and practices.
  • Recommend changes in accounting policies and procedures based on changes in those standards. 
  • Prepare complex analytical reports in conjunction with the preparation of periodic and annual requests from the Board of Regents and/or senior administrative personnel. 
  • Direct and coordinate the year-end audits with Financial Statement Auditors (currently KPMG), State Auditors, University Accounting Services, and Central Administration.
  • Coordinate and supervise reporting to Standard & Poor's & Moody's rating agencies, audits, and special projects. 
  • Supervise the completion of the annual Sub-Certification for all of UI Health Care and direct follow-up where needed.
  • Provide all UIHC financial information for SEIU bargaining process.
  • Schedule staff activities for completion and review all assigned work for accuracy, timeliness, and completeness.
  • Schedule staff relative to financial reporting and accounting requirements.
  • Monitor and approve the release of financial information.
  • Supervise and coordinate the accounting functions for all colleges and administrative units assigned and act as final reviewer and approver for most financial transactions.
  • Oversee annual PeopleSoft GL updates. 
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Perform supervisory functions including interviewing, selection, training, performance evaluation, salary determination, promotion and disciplinary action. 
  • Train and mentor new managers and financial analysts in our department and others regarding general ledger information and tools. 
  • Present financials and information about our department to various audiences across UI Health Care. 
  • Supervision and motivation of multiple cross-departmental staff teams.  

Education Requirements

A Master’s degree in Business Administration or Accounting or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 

Experience Requirements

5-7 years managerial experience

Expert knowledge of complex financial and statistical analysis and presentation

Demonstrated knowledge of accounting principles and applications

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated proficiency in computer software applications, i.e. Microsoft Office products

Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment

Desired Qualifications

3-7 years of experience in health care accounting. Experience in an academic medical center is a plus

Active CPA license 

Experience with hospital/physician revenue and reimbursement accounting

Experience working in public accounting is preferred

Considerable knowledge of accounting principles, fiscal controls, management information systems, and data analysis
