Grant Accountant, University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts and Sciences 

Do you have a passion for collaboration, a keen eye for detail, and want to be part of a team enabling exciting research and scholarship?  The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) is seeking a Grant Accountant to support discovery and creativity in the University of Iowa’s largest college. This entry-level position in the CLAS Grant Support Office holds excellent opportunities for advancement. The candidate will work in a casual environment with a dedicated and supportive team. 

The CLAS Grant Support Office (GSO), established in 2018, provides a variety of support services to the college’s 37 academic departments ranging from health and hard sciences to the arts and humanities.  

The Grant Accountant is an essential member of the team throughout the process.  Pre-award, they will assist in supporting faculty scholars and scientists to develop compelling funding proposals to federal, state, and private funding agencies. Post-award, they will help provide critical support to our researchers navigating the financial and reporting requirements of awarded grants and contracts. At all stages, the Grant Accountant plays an essential role: the efforts of our GSO team have helped to double the college’s external funding since 2018, and today CLAS is poised for further growth in its expansive research enterprise. 

Key Responsibilities will include some or all of the following: 

Post-Award Administration:  

  • Complete basic and some complex reconciliations and reporting following pre-established processes 

  • Assist with the preparation and submission of post-award financial and material reports and schedules for university and granting agencies 

  • Monitor accounts/expenditures 

  • Perform basic routine analysis of project expenditures  

  • Prepare routine, standardized reports following pre-established processes.  

  • Use basic to moderate knowledge of financial systems. 

Grant Development:  

  • Assist with the development of research budgets and budget justifications for grant and contract proposals. 

  • Review proposals and assure completeness 

  • Route proposals to the Division of Sponsored Programs 

Financial Analysis and Planning:  

  • Perform basic routine analyses of project expenditures  

  • Prepare routine, standardized reports following pre-established processes.  

  • Use basic to moderate knowledge of financial systems. 

  • Monitor compliance with contract/grant terms in accordance with university policies and state and federal regulations.

Required Qualifications 

  • A Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking skills 
  • Proficient in computer software applications, including Microsoft Excel and Word

Desirable Qualifications 

  • Work or internship experience in accounting, customer service, or research 
  • Experience working in a team environment
  • Experience preparing or administering grants or contracts 
  • Experience working in an academic setting
  • Experience working with the University of Iowa Research Information System (UIRIS) and/or University of Iowa financial reports

Salary range: $46,000 to commensurate
