Position Summary:

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Bioengineering is seeking an Engineering Associate for our Offsite/Ambulatory team who, under minimal supervision, completes a variety of medical equipment repairs, safety verification and preventive maintenance tasks on a broad range of patient care equipment and/or systems of moderate complexity. Serves as the front-line customer contact for assigned departments and completes assigned projects and installations according to manufacturer or regulatory requirements.

  • Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, testing and repair of medical equipment in assigned departments to regulatory and manufacturer standards.
  • Monitor assigned department equipment maintenance schedules and prioritize effort to maximize efficiency and patient safety.
  • Expected to assist with clipboard work, i.e., non-departmental specific equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Use service manuals, schematic diagrams, vendor phone support, and basic electronic troubleshooting skills to resolve medical equipment malfunctions and customer concerns with equipment operation.
  • Accurately document work performed, parts replaced, and time spent in a clear concise manner.
  • Coordinate, collaborate and communicate equipment maintenance progress with patient care staff; keeping staff informed of delays in service, repair status, and disruptions to patient care.
  • Complete recall remediation of patient care equipment in a timely manner.
  • Attend vendor training to meet competency requirements for maintaining specific types of medical equipment.
  • Respond to medical equipment after hours emergency call-backs as part of a rotating on-call schedule. Responding on-site to UIHC main campus within 40 minutes.
  • May assist with estimation of medical equipment maintenance charges for installation or planning projects.
  • May be responsible for functional supervision of staff or students.

Salary: $55,000 to commensurate

Education Required

A Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, or other related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications

  • Typically, 0-1 years of experience working with biomedical equipment or healthcare technology.
  • Basic knowledge of medical equipment function.
  • Basic understanding of common clinical terminology as well as that of life sciences such as anatomy and physiology.
  • Basic electronic training with knowledge of electronic theory and technology.
  • Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity
  • Must meet the University of Iowa Fleet Services program rules and regulations, due to the ability to drive University vehicles.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience maintaining medical equipment in a field service or healthcare environment.

  • Experience with Philips PICiX and Intellivue monitoring products.
