Bioengineering Specialist - Perioperative
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Bioengineering is seeking an Engineering Specialist. This position will function as primary technical contact for biomedical technology issues in UI Healthcare perioperative and procedural areas. Assist director with activities of the Bioengineering Department in the selection, procurement, and delivery of biomedical equipment and services. Ensure all program elements are designed and implemented to comply with Joint Commission and other regulatory and inspection agency requirements, guidelines, and standards. Assist the director in developing annual goals and objectives related to supporting the growth and development of Bioengineering in response to present and future needs.
Position Responsibilities:
- Supervise a team of technicians responsible for repair and routine maintenance of patient care equipment, directing resources where needed to meet changing maintenance needs.
- Supervise team member’s work performance including evaluation and approval of leave requests.
- Coach and develop technicians to support cross training of equipment and departmental responsibilities.
- Provide input and feedback regarding the policies and procedures that guide and support functions of the Bioengineering Department.
- Meet goals with respect to biomedical technology in support of strategic plan.
- Review capital submittals for biomedical equipment within their areas of responsibility as requested.
- Attend schematic design and design development meetings for construction projects involving biomedical equipment, advising equipment planners on medical equipment standardization, placement, and supporting infrastructure as needed. Conduct pre-purchase evaluations, research vendors, assess cost of ownership, and other activities in support of biomedical equipment acquisitions as needed.
- Conduct initial evaluations of new medical equipment to determine maintenance tools and procedures needed to complete required maintenance.
- Assist with the medical device hazard and recall notification program, assigning Bioengineering resources to complete recall mitigation in a timely manner.
- Monitor and maintain equitable service loads for technicians, working with technicians to adjust as necessary.
- Provide management of equipment performance and vendor service to maintain the highest standards of patient care. When products or services are found to be unsatisfactory, the engineering specialist is responsible for expediting solutions, including replacing equipment or terminating service agreements.
- Evaluate the Bioengineering perioperative team needs for test equipment or other assets.
- Communicate with key clinical customers through participation on system committees.
- Negotiate system-wide service agreements with vendors where appropriate.
- Supervise and participate in in-service training of new technicians and clinical staff concerning use and operation of patient care equipment.
- Respond to medical equipment after hours emergency call-backs as part of a rotating on-call schedule. Must be able respond on-site to UIHC main campus within 45 minutes.
- Serve as backup to other Bioengineering staff during periods of absence.

Salary: $70,000 to commensurate

Education Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering or other technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications:
- Typically, 3-5 years of experience working with biomedical equipment or healthcare technology.
- Electronic training with knowledge of electronic theory and various types of patient care equipment and technology.
- In-depth knowledge of Joint Commission and other applicable standards and regulations.
- Functional knowledge of many different types of patient care equipment.
- Knowledge of computer systems and ability to use basic computer software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, work order tracking, inventory management, and databases).
- Ability to plan, organize, and implement policies and procedures.
- Ability to clearly communicate technical principles to non-technical personnel both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to supervise, direct, evaluate, and delegate work and responsibilities to direct reports.
- Ability to analyze complex problems and recommend solutions.
- Demonstrated job-related experience and/or commitment to diversity.
- Must meet the University of Iowa Fleet Services program rules and regulations, due to the ability to drive University vehicles.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience maintaining medical equipment in a perioperative environment.
- Experience supervising technical service staff.
- Demonstrated experience working with various service vendors and other customers to arrange availably of equipment for service.
- Experience evaluating service history of equipment to recommend the continuation or cancellation of contracts or service agreements.
