Health Records Analyst - Cancer Center
The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC) at the University of Iowa is seeking to hire a Health Records Analyst (PRH2) to perform complex technical and related duties for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Oncology Registry including analyzing, reviewing, abstracting, and coding medical information obtained from a variety of hospital data sources such as documents, reports, lab profiles, on-line records and other summaries initiated in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and external organizations to be used for hospital statistical, administrative, billing and risk surveillance.
Job Duties:
- Code and abstract cases requiring knowledge of multiple complex coding systems.
- Collect information to be obtained for completion or updating of Oncology Registry abstract through review of medical record(s), CNExT,Epic, and information external to the organization for established standards required by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC), Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) and mandated by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoS/CoC) and the National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Group (NCI/SEER) program.
- Determine appropriate coding to document Evidence of Disease (EOD) and/or Site Specific Disease Index (SSDI) and surgical resections.
- Review TNM Staging for completeness and accuracy; assure compliance with the ACoS/CoC requirements.
- Participate in quality assurance (QA) reviews and field tests offered by SEER, ACoS, State Health Registry of Iowa (SHRI) and in-house quality control.
- Review information and assure that documentation regarding histology, diagnostic confirmation, stage, grade, primary site (with laterality), and hospital code (if the diagnosis was made elsewhere) is accurate.
- Review follow-up data and information provided by patients, families, physicians, external hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities; update database and provide updates to the State Health Registry of Iowa.
- Determine abstract status; implement procedures; follow-up as necessary.
- Generate standard physician inquiry letter(s); follow-up to assure response; update database with current data.
- Assists with basic reporting of standard monthly reports.
- Work with the Rapid Quality Reporting System (RQRS) to collect and disseminate information related to quality standards and clinical team interventions.
- Respond to inquiries from physicians, nurses, patients, families and individuals from outside institutions; provide patient information in accordance with UIHC and HIPAA guidelines.
- Assist with the Annual Call for Data.
- Assist with duties assigned to meet CoC Standards.
- Assist in the training student assistants and new staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 1 year of experience working in Oncology Registry work
- Certification as Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR)
- Education or experience in human anatomy
- Knowledge and experience of human anatomy
- Knowledge and experience of medical terminology
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, needing minimal guidance
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent written verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in a CoC (Commission on Cancer) Accredited Cancer Program
- Experience managing complex information requiring attention to detail
- Knowledge of University of Iowa policies, procedures and regulations
