The University of Iowa Libraries seeks an innovative and collaborative librarian for the newly created Electronic Resources Cataloger & Discovery Services Librarian. Reporting to the Director of Cataloging-Metadata, this person will provide high quality metadata for a vast array of electronic resources and serve as the department contact for e-resources. The incumbent will also actively work across departments to optimize our discovery solutions, including working with staff in Library IT, Acquisitions, and public services. The UI Libraries use a variety of proprietary and open-source systems, including Ex Libris’ Alma and Esploro, Islandora, and ArchivesSpace, all of which have their data piped into our discovery system, Ex Libris’ Primo (locally branded as InfoHawk+).

Specific Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Review and, as needed, enhance cataloging of electronic resources including integrating resources, e-books, electronic journals, and licensed databases, according to established standards and national and local best practices. Perform complex copy or original cataloging for individual electronic resource titles as needed.
  • Working closely with staff in Acquisitions and Library IT, manage the metadata for the Libraries’ collection of subscription electronic resources. Develop and streamline procedures and workflows for electronic resources and resolve discovery and access problems arising from obsolete or incorrect information appearing in bibliographic records or portfolios.
  • Working with the Catalog Management Librarian and Library IT staff, manage some batchloading and maintenance of catalog records received from vendors. Use data-loading tools and batch processes and manage, prepare, and facilitate the loading of e-resource record sets into Alma, as well as perform e-record maintenance.
  • Serve as a contact for public services staff with questions regarding access to electronic resources. Manage the troubleshooting and resolution of access issues to content in consultation with other library staff as needed.
  • Evaluate the potential use of services and technologies to enhance the efficiency and quality of cataloging procedures and workflows for electronic resources.
  • Identify, evaluate, and stay current with emerging trends, practices, and standards in cataloging, metadata, electronic resources, discovery, and user behavior that have potential for enhancing access to electronic resources for users.
  • Working closely with metadata specialists, members of Library IT, and public services staff, evaluate discovery and access of metadata through the UI’s library discovery system, Ex Libris’ Primo (locally branded as InfoHawk+), and recommend changes to profiles as needed. Metadata comes from Alma (MARC), Islandora (MODS), Esploro (Dublin Core), and ArchivesSpace (EAD).
  • Working closely with public services staff and members of Library IT, plan ongoing development, user testing, and analysis of Primo in a methodical, organized, phased approach.
  • Actively participate in the Cataloging-Metadata leadership team, contributing to department-level planning and the formulation of cataloging policies and procedures.
  • Keep abreast of developments in cataloging standards and trends, applying new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching.
  • Participate in and contribute to relevant library and University-wide activities and committees.
  • Represent the University Libraries in campus-wide and inter-institutional initiatives.
  • Actively supports the University of Iowa Libraries commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace.
  • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.
