The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking to hire a Collection Strategist for the Finance, Facilities, and Collection Fulfillment Department (FFCF), which includes Acquisitions, Bookstacks, the Library Annex, and Interlibrary Loan. Reporting to the Senior Director of FFCF, this position will coordinate collections assessment and development at a high level, collect data on collection content and usage, create reports and data dashboards, engage with content providers and other stakeholders, and contribute to the promotion of collections for teaching, learning, and research. The Collection Strategist will provide leadership for an evolving collections approach that incorporates collective collecting, an emphasis on open scholarship, and data informed decision making.


Key Areas of Responsibilities and Tasks

Instruction, Consultation, and Research Services

  • Collaborates with Libraries’ Strategic Communications to craft and distribute campus-wide collections messaging and assists teaching, learning, and research librarians in the promotion of new and/or existing resources.

Select, Acquire, Organize, Preserve, and Provide Information Resources and Services

  • Receives and reviews large-scale promotional offers and collection updates from vendors, providing data and relevant information to selectors in support of collection development.
  • Works with consortia (e.g., BTAA, CRL, NERL) to advance collaborative collecting and open scholarship. Organizes and presents consortial renewals and new agreements to the UI’s Collection Management Team (CMT) and Acquisitions Department for review. Requests and collects consortial data or information and communicates to CMT, Acquisitions, and Libraries’ Finance, as needed. Serves as the UI’s Collection Development Officer with the Big Ten Academic Alliance and coordinates the UI’s contributions to the BIG Collection.
  • Utilizes assessment tools and methods to manage and assess collections data. Creates reports and a collections dashboard for library selectors and partners to better shape collections decision-making and policy development.
  • Maintains internal collection development documentation, including collating collections reports, policies and procedures, and collective collections agreements.

Leadership/Staff and Resource Management/Financial Responsibility

  • In collaboration with the Collection Management Team and Libraries’ Finance, strategically allocates and prioritizes Libraries’ resources to ensure alignment with teaching, research and learning needs of faculty, researchers, clinicians, and students at the University of Iowa.
  • Develops user-centered, data-driven collection strategies and policies through assessment of library circulating, licensed, and open access collections for relevance, impact, and usability.

Continuous Learning & Skills Development

  • Contribute to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching.
  • Participate in and contribute to relevant library and University-wide activities and committees.
  • Represent the University Libraries in campus-wide and inter-institutional initiatives.

Professional Contributions 

  • Contribute to and learn from the profession through such avenues as local, state, and national professional organizations, presentations, and publications.

DEAI

  • Actively supports the UI Libraries’ commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace.


Required Education:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science or the international equivalent.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • To be appointed at the Expert Librarian classification, four or more years of related years of experience in an academic or research library or equivalent, are required. 
    • Senior Librarian (PLB4/6A) classification, six or more years of related years of experience in an academic or research library or equivalent, are required. 
  • Demonstrated experience collaboratively developing collections and collection development policies in an academic library, providing collection assessment, and/or managing large collection budgets.
  • Experience in collaborative planning processes to inform strategy, demonstrated by examples such as the creation of roadmaps or plans produced through multi-stakeholder review or process.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion in an academic environment, in a workplace setting, and/or in the community.

  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Project planning experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of trends in use of academic library collections.
  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion as they relate to library collection issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with collection analysis tools combined with the ability to interpret analysis results to recommend changes in approach.
  • Proven skills in assessing and interpreting quantitative and qualitative collection data as demonstrated by work experience.

The Libraries intends to hire for one position at either the Senior Librarian classification (PLB4/6A), requisition #23004593, or the Expert Librarian classification (PLB3/5A), requisition #23004587, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

The hiring salary range for this position at the Expert Librarian classification is $65,000 - $82,000 and at the Senior Librarian classification is $75,000 - $108,000.

This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work, with the majority of work time being on campus. Remote work must be performed at a location within the state of Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.
