The University of Iowa Department of Internal Medicine is seeking a 100% Inpatient Hospitalist APP (PA/ARNP) to provide medical care and management for the Malignant Hematology service, caring for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Function independently and collaboratively with the health care team to plan, deliver, and provide health care for patients with blood cancer in the inpatient setting. Work collaboratively with a small health care team that prioritizes work/life balance. The position requires staffing of weekdays as well as occasional weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.

Duties to include: 

Provision of Medical Care; Collaboration with Care Team:

  • In collaboration, provides healthcare services for primary, acute, and complex care patients with blood cancer and manages patient's overall care, initiates appropriate referrals and consultations, and identifies expected outcomes for diagnoses.
  • Work with patients and families to determine their understanding of the patient’s condition, proposed treatment plan and treatment options, provide appropriate education; discuss and develop goals of care and identify measurable treatment objectives
  • Perform/order medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including Lumbar Puncture and Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy.
  • Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies and other related studies
  • Prescribe and/or deliver medication including advanced anti-cancer therapeutics
  • Consult/collaborate with other care team members, including fellows, residents, physicians, nurses, etc.
  • Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues.
  • Influence others to adopt best practices.

Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education:

  • Complete patient medical records, reports and forms for documentation, and respond to all patient documentation inquires for accurate coding and billing purposes
  • Participate in or lead Divisional or Departmental quality improvement projects.

Education/ Health/Promotion/Research:

  • Provide health education to patients and families.
  • Enhance and support the clinical educational experience of trainees including fellows, residents, medical students, and other health professional learners.
  • Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of and follow clinical practice guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Administration/ Human Resources Management:

  • Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care.
  • May serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.
  • Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications.
  • May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of care.

About Malignant Hematology Inpatient Service

Malignant Hematology is an inpatient service of the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Transplantation. The team includes six faculty members, three advanced practice providers and numerous other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive, disease-focused, multidisciplinary care for patients at the only NCI-Designated Cancer Center in the state. The mission of the division is to treat and cure adults with blood cancer who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols. We are seeking physician assistants and nurse practitioners who will be able to autonomously plan, deliver, and evaluate health care to patients under the direction and supervision of our faculty.

Education/Licensure Requirements:

  • Physician Assistant (PA):  Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. 
  • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): 
    • A master’s degree or Doctorate degree in nursing is required.   
    • Board certified and registered as an ARNP in state of Iowa.
    • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required
  •  Must have current DEA and CSA certificate

Experience Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Highly Desirable Qualifications

  • Clinical rotation or experience in Hematology/Oncology is highly desirable.
  • Experience practicing as a PA/ARNP in hematology/oncology, internal medicine, critical care or emergency medicine is highly desirable
  • Experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for critically ill patients in an inpatient setting is highly desirable.
  • Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.
  • Experience managing length of stay, improving resource utilization and decreasing costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is highly desirable.
