Medication Diversion Specialist
- Analyze data on controlled medications, and medications that have an appeal for diversion. Review of high-cost medications would be completed upon request

Maintain efficient operations of the diversion software system regarding required interfaces with Omnicell and Epic
-
Understand controlled substance handling processes in pharmacy, nursing units and perioperative areas, and identify and communicate noncompliance with established policies and guidelines to ensure compliance with current policies and procedures

Provide leadership and actively participate in health-system wide multidisciplinary education activities relating to medication diversion
-
Maintain and continue to refine a comprehensive electronic surveillance system and auditing program to detect medication diversion that houses data from across the institution relating to issues involving medication handling and security
-
Review data collected and tracked diversion-related data from across the institution, including medication handling issues and medication security issues.

Maintain operations of diversion prevention software

Maintain database and physical records related to prior diversion cases to diversion

Participate in and provide support of ongoing investigation processes in suspected medication diversion incidents, including patient medication chart review and review of data from automated dispensing systems or paper documentation systems, including direct observations of individuals if needed

Ensure that internal and external regulatory reporting occurs as required following each diversion event

Collect and maintain records relating to investigations from all parties involved in the investigation.

Serves as a member and recorder for the Drug Diversion Oversight Workgroup

Maintain up-to-date medication handling, diversion prevention, detection, and reporting policies and procedures

Work collaboratively with all relevant departments (both within and outside UIHC) and serve as a health-system wide diversion resource

Present institutional medication diversion reports as appropriate

Stay up to date on relevant policy changes initiated from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Iowa Board of Pharmacy (IBP), Federal Drug Administration (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), The Joint Commission (TJC), Board of Nursing (BON), Medicare Conditions of Hospital Participation and other relevant regulatory agencies.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of related professional experience and education

Iowa Board of Pharmacy registration is required prior to commencement of employment.

3 or more years of demonstrated experience in auditing and analyzing data, compliance or risk management.

Experience and/or commitment to diversity and service excellence in the workplace
-
Demonstrated experience facilitating change processes and working collaboratively with diverse, multi-disciplinary teams

Demonstrated experience working independently with minimal supervision
-
Proficient with computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet applications

3 or more years of experience working in the field of pharmacy or nursing
-
Experience in the field of diversion prevention

Excellent public speaking and teaching abilities

Familiarity in the health-system practice environment including an understanding of TJC Medication Management Standards related to medication security

Knowledge and understanding of federal and state medication handling and controlled substances regulations, EPA, DEA, BON, IBP and FDA regulations, and the Medicare Conditions of Hospital Participation
