The University of Iowa Facilities Management is seeking a highly motivated person to work as an HVAC Technician III. The person in this role will install, maintain, and service building and departmental heating ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. This position coordinates work with other trades and must be certified to perform work to levels set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency. The person in this role must be able to diagnose complex equipment problems, use sophisticated diagnostic equipment and EPA approved refrigerant reclaim equipment. This position tests and evaluates performance of systems using specialized equipment and performs continuous commissioning and retro commissioning.

The HVAC Technician III conducts a variety of audible, visual, and mechanical tests, uses computerized building environmental automation systems, records and service reports and other tools to diagnose and recommend system modifications to improve equipment and system performance.  This role provides functional guidance and training to apprentices, replacements, students, and other personnel as required.  They will also investigate methods and equipment to be used in environmental systems and make recommendations to engineers. 

 

Duties to Include:

 

  • Operates, inspects, maintains and repairs chillers, chilled water equipment and systems to include associated auxiliary equipment such as air compressors, air dryers, pumps, chiller tube bundles, heat exchangers, and other emerging technology equipment and systems.

 

  • Troubleshoot complex Mechanical System.

 

  • Repair/replace defective parts and equipment.

 

  • Operate computerized building environmental automation systems that control heating and cooling systems.

 

  • Use specialized testing equipment for diagnostic evaluation.

 

  • Read and interpret prints, schematics and diagrams.

 

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm: overtime as required

About Facilities Management:

Facilities Management (FM) is a service unit of approximately 500 employees who work behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, serving the University of Iowa as stewards for our downtown Iowa City campus and Oakdale campus in Coralville. FM staff coordinate campus master planning, manage design and construction, and maintain and clean the buildings and grounds.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  1. Eight years of experience in computerized building environmental automation systems, refrigeration or air conditioning work, including apprenticeship, with two years of experience in evaluating and recommending system optimization changes, or two years of experience in evaluating and recommending system optimization changes and meets the minimum eligibility requirements of ESM II; and
  2. Has refrigeration certificate of at least type 2.
  3. May need to possess a valid driver’s license and meet University’s Fleet Safety Program.
  4. Journeyman license required
  5. Prefer 2 years of college/trade school

 

 

Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous soldering experience.
  • Previous Commercial / industrial HVAC experience.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Project work knowledge and use of hand tools, power tools, and test equipment.
  • Public contact / customer service experience.
  • Hydronic license
  • Preventative maintenance and troubleshooting experience 
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Ability to work with and around a diverse culture.
  • Good communication skills and experience working on a team
