The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Engineering Services is seeking a Fire Safety Technician I. This position will be full-time with a primary schedule of 6:00a.m to 2:00p.m. Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the area of installation, repair, alteration, replacement and maintenance of components of environmental systems such as refrigeration, temperature control and heating (all fuel types) and support systems.  Utilizes computerized building environmental automation systems to collect mechanical system performance data to ensure system reliability. 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Uses handheld scanner to inspect extinguishers and other equipment as applicable codes require.
  • Inspects buildings to locate hazardous conditions and code violations.
  • Repairs and replaces components relating to fire safety equipment installations and associated database recordkeeping.
  • Assists technicians with inspections and repair work of the fire and life safety equipment.
  • Performs inspections in accordance with applicable codes and organizes inspection reports.
  • Conducts routine surveys and inspections of equipment.
  • Determines fire extinguisher type for hazards present, as related to the International Code Council and NFPA.
  • Inspects and maintains fire extinguishers.
  • Assists with NFPA Inspections.
  • Provides emergency response to the University as needed.
  • Other assigned duties.

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school graduation or equivalent.
  • Two years of post-high school training in the basic skills of fire prevention or any combination of training and experience in fire prevention work from which comparable knowledge and ability is acquired, or
  • Certified as a Fire Inspector 1 or NICET Certification Level 1 in a Fire Alarm/Protection System.
