The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking an Associate Genetic Counselor to provide genetic counseling services to patients and families at University of Iowa Health Care within the Departments of Pediatrics Neurology & Adult Neurology to assure the effective and efficient delivery of health care. Genetic counselors will also provide education to health professionals.

The department intends to hire for 1 position from either Genetic Counselor, requisition 25005832 or Associate Genetic Counselor, requisition 25005834, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please apply to the specific position for which you which to be considered or both.
 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Provide Specialty Clinical/Technical Service/Patient Care:

  • Provide patient education, supportive genetic counseling and advocacy for patients and families within scope of practice.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge base regarding genetics.
  • Obtain and review relevant family history, medical history, and assess psychosocial factors.
    Discuss available testing options including the risks and benefits, and provide pre- and post-test counseling about results.
  • Provide an accurate risk assessment based on data obtained.
  • Facilitate changes in care based on systematic evaluation and evidence-based research.

    Document in the patient’s electronic medical record a clear, concise summary of counseling and care coordination provided.
  • Provide follow-up counseling for patients/families, e.g. by telephone, letter, or return visit.
  • Participate in design and implementation of the research projects.
  • Mentor and/or supervise others and provide evaluative feedback about performance.

Provide Education:

  • Research and develop patient education materials
  • Develop and present continuing education programs and serve as a resource for healthcare 
    providers, students, residents, and staff both within and outside UI Health Care.
  • Supervise care delivery of clinicians and residents/students, providing evaluative feedback and recommendations regarding performance.

Collaborate/Communicate with Health Care Team:

  • Collaborate with others on the health care team related to clinical/technical specification to assure safe and effective delivery of care.
  • Coordinate medical consultations and referrals for additional medical consultation, testing as necessary, and other resources.
  • Influence others to utilize best practices.
  • Attend departmental and specialty meetings.
  • Contribute ideas and seek ways to improve assigned processes.

Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education:

  • Follow and assist with development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance. 
     

Required Qualifications:

•    A Master's Degree in Human Genetics, or Genetic Counseling is required.

•    Board certification or eligibility in genetic counseling from the American Board of Genetic Counseling is required.

•    Genetics Counseling clinical rotations or internship experience, or 6 months to 1 year experience in the field of genetic counseling is required.

•    Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are required.

•    Valid Driver's License, plus the ability to meet and maintain The University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standard.


Desired Qualifications:

•    Demonstrated time management and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously is desirable.

•    Experience in the field of genetic counseling is desirable.

•    Experience in genetics research and/or recruitment of human subjects for research projects is desirable.
