The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking APP Hospitalists to join our Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. This position will provide overall medical care and provide medical management for patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided, in the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. You will function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the inpatient Newborn Nursery population.  Extensive focus is caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care on 24/7 basis. The position will consist of 12-hour shifts with rotating day and night shifts. New APP graduates are also encouraged to apply. 

Duties to include:

  • Assesses the patient’s health status by means of history taking, physical examination, laboratory studies, and any additional means that are determined to be appropriate.
  • Plans and communicates treatment programs relating to the health aspects of the patient’s needs.
  • Ability to perform technical skill, such as circumcisions and other common procedures, defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing or Board of Physician Assistants, and UI Health Care standards.
  • Recognizes, discriminates, and manages acute illness, chronic conditions, and disabilities.
  • Determines and facilitates referral and consultation needs in a timely manner.
  • Completes medical documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines.
  • Initiates therapeutic measures using independent judgment according to recognized clinical guidelines.
  • Participates in the instruction and teaching of trainees.
  • Performs other projects as assigned.
  • Assumes responsibility for supervisory and administrative activities and special projects as delegated by supervisor/division director/medical director.
  • Has ability to perform patient and family assessment by means of an appropriately comprehensive history and physical examination, develop differential diagnosis based on history, physical and interpretation of appropriately ordered tests and evaluations, develop a plan of care and implement treatment including referrals and prescriptions, and evaluate patient responses to health, illness and treatment.
  • Knowledge of research activities, research findings, and quality improvement principles related to patient outcomes with ability to participate in development and implementation of such activities.
  • Ability to utilize therapeutic communication skills to provide counseling to patients and families.
  • Expertise in the common diagnosis and healthcare needs of patients they see.
  • Ability to function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement, Iowa Board of Nursing or Iowa Board of Physician Assistants, and UI Health Care standards.

Education Requirements: 

Physician Assistant (PA)

  • Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Bord of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by NCCPA.
  • Eligible to be licensed by the State of Iowa to perform as a Physician Assistant. Certification by the NCCPA.

-OR- 

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)

  • A master’s degree is required.  Master’s degree in nursing or physician assistant studies (or similar) is preferred. If master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • A Current RN license from the State of Iowa is required.
  • Current board certification as a nurse practitioner (FNP/NNP/PNP/PNP-PC/PNP-AC) and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is require. 

Experience Requirements:

  • Ability to perform technical skill and function as an independent practitioner defined by collaborative practice agreement according to Iowa Board of Nursing, and UI Health Care standards.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

Highly Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience of one to three years in the care of pediatric patients or experience that demonstrates knowledge in the care of pediatric patients.
  • Demonstrated experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for pediatric patients in an inpatient setting.
  • Prior Pediatric APP experience or training.
  • Demonstrated experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided.
  • Demonstrated experience managing length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care.
  • Understands the Nurse Practice Act, including ARNP components. (ARNP specific)
  • The below qualifications are required prior to starting in the position on day 1:
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
    • Federal DEA license
